I was referring to the date for the update, not the posting date. Anyway, downloaded and realized it was indeed a new version. It may help to write out the version number, e.g. MagicMerge_v1.33B.exe_File.

This new version now triggers my LUA rule (after slight modification: if Checked ~="" instead of if Checked=="1" because of the addition of document name)  Cheesy.  The merged items get a subitem below them.

1. Did you do something special to trigger the LUA rule? Other DDE applications do not trigger the LUA rule  Sad.

2. BTW, why do I always get a dialogue box:
File Conversion - Formletterxx.csv
preview
"EMcsv"
"EM"

I need to click on OK before MM completes...

3. Would it be possible to place the "Merged Created Folders" as subfolders below the "MagicMerge Tracking" Folder?

if properly connecting to ecco, for most folder types they should.

(not likely the cause but potentially related, there is a small known bug in slang dde that doesn't handle multiple item single folder mods,  if they are doing this,  the values are not being updated so likely you'd notice).

eg., MagicView should also be triggering.

you should *only* see that if you have non-English characters.

cannot yet access the Font info of items externally,  so have no idea what CODE PAGE,  non-English data is supposed to be.

if you are all English and *still* get the dialog,   tell me more!  (maybe even post an example .eco  [with .doc included as item] that gets you there).

currently we cannot touch the folder structure.  (we can see but not touch).

best alternate solution is a 'form' template with 'blank' folders pre-positioned.

this is possible to do,  but not seem like great solution usually.

2. I am using everything US English.
A. Create a new Ecco file. Select Netmanage (in Phonebook).
B. Open a new blank Word document (Word 2003).
C. Word Merge (using Active Doc & selected Item)
=> File Conversion Dialogue

3. Not sure that I follow the comment about adding Blank Folders. MM adds the Merge Folders. How can I control where those are placed in the Folder Pane?  Adding other blank folders would not change how MM adds the folders?

I should also mention that this problem started with versions 1.32 and 1.33. v 1.30 don't have this issue.

hmm.. that would seem odd... you're trying to merge a blank doc,  should not get any message at all.

MM has an (undocumented) option to look for "MM_Blank" folders, and use those for logging merges.  you can copy and paste (even hundreds) of MM_Blank  folders under the MailMerge Tracking folder to create a ready-to-use form.

interesting.

1.30 should not really be merging single items,  does it ?

Merging a blank document (and a single item) works both in v1.30 & 1.33.

I just get a section break.

The only difference is that the I get the conversion dialogue in v 1.33. After clicking on "OK", the end result is the same.

interesting.

activated the MM_Blank option (ie., download latest), and updated manual.

will look at the single item blank form issue.

The issue is not with "single item blank form".
The issue is the conversion dialogue box that pops up in versions after 1.30. It always happens!
(i.e. it happens with single or multiple items and with blank or not blank documents)

after 1.30 using very different base to communicate inside Ecco.  That could be part of issue,  *but*,

I can't duplicate what you're seeing.

am only getting  the dialog when supposed to,  eg. non Enlgish characters and need the code-base.

you might try a systems reboot  (or try on another system).
if that not change result,  try on clean file in non-slang extension.

also try to save under new name the merge template.

if you try with different data sets (phonebook as filtered, items selected, etc.)  still *always* get conversion dialog box ?

try also adding/ (or if was already there, removing )  itemtext to the merge fields,  see if impacts at all.

try also from clean (shift + new) file and see if any different.

(but  in all tests,  include at least one ACTUAL field... such as E-Mail or something..)

ps: the field you select could impact result.  Eg., if there is hidden garbage in some field,  that is non-english and will trigger the conversion dialog.  The new ecco interface may be either (1) adding its own garbage to the nice file data,  or (2) correctly reading garbage which was not read previously.  (or other issues may be at play).

I have reproduced the issue on another computer.

1. Create a new word template document (with the company field only) and save to hard drive.
2. Create a new Ecco file and select one item (Netmanage).
3. Merge
=> No issue.
4. Close the new merged document.
5. Do the merge again
=> I get the conversion dialogue.

Workaround:
1. Create a word document with the company field only and save to hard drive.
2. Create a new Ecco file and select one item (Netmanage).
3. Merge
=> No issue.
4. Close Word
5. Reopen Word and the template
6. Do the merge again
=> Still no issue!

A Question: If I try to close Word after a merge, Word asks if I want to save changes!? Does MM make any non-visible changes to the original template..?
Maybe there are some changes written to memory that causes the issue? Maybe closing and reopening Word gets rid of those changes?

fantastic bug diagnosis.   (will look into deeper).

Yes,

non-visible changes are usually made to the template file.  One of the purposes/uses of this is to allow access within merge to info otherwise not possible.

for example

{ DocProperty EMRecordCount }  is an example field you can use that accesses a 'hard' 'hidden' template property, the EMRecordCount.   Can do much in merge automation knowing how many records (for example including a FOOTER!).   This is addressed in MM help.

On each merge the template file updates (in memory, not on disk) with the new properties,  in this example,  the active record count and other info relevant to merge.

Part of what is so cool about this is the things you can do with MM that otherwise not possible.  Control of date field output styles,  on-the-fly merges,  report merge footers, auto changing merge text based on % of merge run complete.  (eg. sending 30% of list X text, 30% Y text, and 30% z text).   You can also build in messages etc. generated to operator by Word,  based on reaching end of merge run, etc.

when running merge on template from disk,  should not have any issue about closing.

Edited:
am unable to duplicate.  have made some possible helpful mod to latest upload.  Please let me know if still can duplicate this behavior.

I tried v. 1.35B on the 1st computer. Still the same issue.
Note that the two computers behave differently:

Computer2: If I close and reopen Word before the 2nd merge, the conversion window is eliminated.
Computer1: Closing/reopening Word does not help on this one. Only solution is to reboot the computer before a 2nd merge to avoid the conversion window!

Not sure if relevant, but I have installed supplemental language support ("Files for East Asian Languages")

I am sure it works fine (NO conversion window) in v1.30B (not sure about v1.31B as I don't have that version).
I am also sure that I have the issue (I GET the conversion window) with version 1.35B.

ok,

in looking at slang trigger issue,  realized we could access more & better folder & item data...

but like those dwarfs in Lord of the Ring,  dug too deep, and started sending data that confused the conversion routine.

So,

since the windows conversion routine seems beyond exact control,

wrote a new one from scratch.

now... (i hope!) we resolve the issue.... FOREVER!!

(but await your test results).

Codepage selection is now fully internal option.  For those who use it,  it's darn cool.

checkout v3.6B download.

(also added to eccotools.com magicMerge thread links to html and pdf instruction manuals.)

Sorry to say, but it is even worse than before (using same test as above).
Now the conversion window defaults to show:
Other encoding=Unicode
Direction=Left-to-Right
Preview:
"EMcvs", "Company"
"EM","",""

When I click OK, I get another window:
Header Record Delimiter.
What am I supposed to select here?
I tried
Field=,
Record=(Enter)

Then got a Merge error: "Record 1 contained too many data fields.....

indeed, that is a bug in error condition handling,  fixed in next release (not posted).

try a merge with SOME DATA!!

(ie. you don't need to do merge is you've not got any data to merge.....)

if you have *any* data in the merge does it work smoothly ??

Bye!

Still get the conversion window (but not the other windows).

Sorry  undecided

actually,  not need additional text in word,  just a value in folder in ecco to merge with.

you are getting a unicode conversion window.   That is interesting.

try closing down windows and creating & saving a file with new file name (that has never been used before).

if you merge that with records that contain some data (eg. use company but merge the entire 'default' phonebook).

still getting the conversion message ?

on first run also (?)

Edited:
Have updated download (v3.8B) should solve totally blank merge issue (at least)

*may* solve converter issue,  if not:

close & restart word;

try first regular.. then if not success,

try also with codePage set to - 1

and let me know!

Nope, sorry. Still no luck (v1.38B).

Still get conversion window using default and after setting Codepage -1.

Note that I am in general testing this on computer1, so restarting word does not help (need to reboot to get rid of the conversion window on that computer - not sure why I need to reboot on computer1).

I also tested on computer2, with the same results (except that restarting Word gets rid of the 1st Conversion window).

BTW, have you tested on [another] computer, e.g. with Asian Language support installed?

ok,  we try again!

download latest,

try w/ default, and with -1 codepage.

in theory this version should not change anything from old,

but then again v 3.0 and 3.2 shouldn't produce different results (in theory!).

so... if this works,  (or not)  Let me know...

(if it works need one more version to test to confirm have isolated issue).
