I am new to this forum. This is my first post.
you are very much welcome.
Quote:I have sought alternative outliners, but have found nothing even close to the capabilities of ECCO. So I remain somewhat frustrated with some of the limitations of ECCO that reflect its origins as a DOS program.
Me too.

(1) The inability to scroll through an outline via mouse wheel. I have been able to find an external program that enables the mouse wheel in ECCO, although I have not yet tried it. I also read in this forum somewhere that there are other options for accomplishing this. Can someone steer me to the best options (those that will most likely work, without bad side effects)?
on the second page of eccotools.com board is 'scroller wheels II' . That program also the freeware program mentioned in that thread, katmouse (freeware) will do job with NO side effects.
in the yahoo ecco_pro forum (
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/ecco_pro/ ) file section you'll find the "Slang Extension". (Freeware). It will also fix the scroller issue, and about 42 other issues as well (and add super powers!). See
http://EccoWiki.com for more info.
there are some *small* side effects to the slang extension (issues with syncing to palm, some other issues, etc.) but you can run 'slanged' and then close and run ecco mode, and back and forth. I personally use the slang extension, but also keep a non-slanged ecco running for a single 'super critical' file.
The slang extension allows agenda power auto-assignments which are SUPER POWERFUL.

(2) By far my biggest issue is formatting outlines for presentation to other people. It certainly would be nice to be able to set different font sizes for different outline levels,
Ecco (latest version) does this. The magicHijack! tool allows pulling parts of ecco to new view to allow alternative formatting.
Quote:and to automatically insert spaces between certain adjacent levels.
I have a personal tool that does that, but still requires some manual fiddle. Can add it to list for future releases. (no promises, as will involve some work to make universal, work on all outline possibilities etc.) Essentially inserts a blank item with tag field (spacer tag) that can global search for and mark all & remove label.
not that is possible to use the (freeware) outline copy tool (eccotools board & requires slang extension) to copy & paste into Word & print from there.
Quote: So a means of automating the formatting process for printing would be a real blessing. Do any of the various tools developed for ECCO provide such capability? Where can I read about them? Any advice on relative merits of different approaches?
Again,
You can select PER LEVEL formatting option in ecco.
With magicHijack you can print any outline section as its own outline, with its own per level formatting, font, size, etc.
also, the slang extension allows programic selection of and item's default COLOR (which is applied in view and printing, even if you don't see the color on the print preview).
hope helpful.
