 MagicView
    Gather & Access Information

WebClipSampleScreenshot2.png

Introduction:

There used to to be a cool program called "NetSnippets" which saved webpages (including graphics) and sort of allowed some kind of outline structure. But it wasn't a real outliner,  and very soon,  all those web pages got out of hand.

If you can't find your info... you don't have it!

Which problem led to this very special tool.   Instantly enter notes and clip information from the screen, the web, Word, Excel, PDFs, E-Mails, etc.,  and place into an outline where you can access the information, move it around, and organize it!

The best, (and maybe only), way to have control of your information is to have it organized.  Traditional 'key word search' techniques or crude outline lists don't let you do that.  MagicView does.

With MagicView you can comfortably save over 1G of over 30,000 text clips per ecco file. Your clips and notes of up to 8 Megs per ecco item can be seamlessly secured with Microsoft's AES 192 bit encryption.  You can grab a bunch of clips and flip through them all together.  You can send your live or saved MagicView page (from any source) directly to your browser or instantly revisit the original.  You can search in Ecco and see a manageable results screen.

You can add to, export, and print your saved  clips.  Maybe best of all,  you can modify, and easily mark up your saved clips,  with super easy to use highlighting,  indexing, cross-page hyperlinks and outline numbering.

With MagicView you can:

    • Gather clips into an outline and automatically track clip date , source, and categories based on clip content.

    • Copy from your viewpages directly to outline sub-items, and visa versa.

    • Enter notes directly and clip from just about anywhere, including graphics from the screen and quick audio notes.

    • Freely attach multimedia files or other objects (JPEG / PNG / GIF / BMP / WAV / WMA / WMF / MP3 / MPEG / AVI / SWF / MP4 / PPT / PDF / DjVu / DOC / XLS / EML / MHT / ETC.), as the viewpage of any item.

    • Comfortably save over a billion characters of text and a virtually unlimited amount of graphics in over 30,000 view pages per ecco file.

    • Seamlessly secure your text with Microsoft AES 192/256 bit strong encryption (requires XP/Windows 2003 or higher).

    • Send your live or saved MagicView page (from any source) directly to your browser or instantly jump to the original source document.

    • Save your pages either within ecco or seamlessly in an external disk folder.

    • Grab a selection of pages and flip through them all together.

    • Share the same note/viewpage between multiple items.

    • Share clips among multiple networked users in real time.   Clips from the web, Word, Excel, Email, etc., can be viewed and edited on networked systems--  even if the system does not have that software installed.

    • Link directly from any viewpages to any other.

    • View a page and all of its linked pages together as one.

    • Export one item or as much of an outline as you select.

    • Export any/all view pages in outline format to a web browser viewable tree, seamlessly including viewpage graphics, PDFs, DjVu, MP3s, media files etc.

    • Export timelines with timeline dating.

    • Search in Ecco and see a manageable results screen.

    • Easily mark up your saved clips and notes,  with super easy to use:

      • Highlighting,

      • Indexing,

      • Private notes & comments,

      • Cross-page hyperlinking,

      • Outline cut & paste integration,

      • Block math,  and

      • Flexible outline numbering.

Hopefully too, MagicView feels at home.

MagicView is fully compatible with your existing Ecco files.  For those who have used a NoteEdit/EditNote plugin with "RTF" notes,  you can instantly use existing notes by simply renaming the note folder to "MagicView_1"  and enabling the RTF option in the File menu.  The MagicView notes are not only more compact and much more powerful as notes,  but are secure and open the door to true information gathering and organization fit for the information age.

Just like in Ecco's main outline, Control + K opens your text formating window.  Tab indents your outline level.   Most every command has a hotkey shortcut. Control + Q is there to instantly insert the date & time, and even the "<" and ">" navigation butons work exactly like the "Prev" and "Next" buttons in Ecco's form view dialog.

MagicView integrates deeply into the Ecco workflow on many levels.  For example, selecting and moving information from MagicView to ecco items is as easy as pressing Control + Alt + C  to instantly copy the current MagicView selection as a new Ecco child item.

Using Ecco MagicView you can move around, organize, and access huge blocks of data using very small tag lines.  You can have Hundreds of Megs of data, and yet have ecco orderly, responsive, and downright fun to use.

Downloading info

In addition to the main MagicView tool,  you can also download the MagicView Ecco Extensions installer.  Run once from your Ecco32.exe program directory.   The Activator will install right click and double click tools inside of ecco, and add any necessary dll files.

Some (especially older) systems may need additional files for features such as direct screen clipping.  The Activator should handle this automatically.   If there is any issue with your system, feel free to request an additional file package.

Helpful notes:

Should no longer be an issue, but helpful to have Ecco already running when you start MagicView.

To activate lined notepad template selected "Template > Ruled Paper" from the View menu.

When getting started with MagicView keep in mind:

MagicView is carefully designed to work with critical data.  Data is only overwritten if you do so very intentionally.  The start-up defaults will not automatically save changes to view pages unless you issue the command to save.  Also,  if your ecco file is not set up to auto-save,  MagicView will not save your ecco file (including the MagicView in ecco pages) unless you issue the command to do so.   The purpose of this initial setup is to protect your ecco file so that it cannot be accidentally changed or permanently modified.  (Control + S  saves the current viewpage,   Winkey + S saves viewpage and ecco file together.   If you open another viewpage you will be prompted to save changes in the previous,  unless the save without prompting option is activated.)

MagicView's default set-up is to 'thumbtack' page views.  That is,  the page view will not update when you change focus of the ecco outline item,  unless you expressly update (for example winkey + ?).   To activate the quickview mode,   you can press Winkey + Q.

MagicView is integrated into outlining functions.   You are generally much better off marking all the text of a Word file and pasting into a viewpage than just attaching a word document as a page.   Similarly,  MagicView can accept pastes which (1) Replace the existing viewpage's content, (2)  Append to the existing viewpage  or (3) Create an entirely new viewpage  (either at the current ecco item selection or into a special webclip folder).  You can also clip based on (A) clipping the selection which is currently marked, (B) clipping the marked selection as the clip title and clipping the entire webpage where the marked text is found, and (C) clipping the webpage found at the address in the currently selected text.    Additionally you can clip (i) without making local copies of clipped graphics or (ii) with saved copies of any graphics in the clipped page/selection.  Becoming familiar with these very distinct options will significantly clarify the clipping options).

Example 1

Note Call Log

What's going on here

Attached to an ecco item (for example, person in phonebook),  what a multiple entry call log attached to a single ecco item can look like.

Times are entered as in ecco, Control + Q.

The highlighting makes review (getting/finding info from our notes) super easy.

The outline structure allows easy & clear note taking.  (all is searchable from within log or ecco).

here we've highlighted a followup task "call next fri", and with two clicks (or a single keystroke),  auto copied it as a sub item that you can see in regular ecco views and, if desired, assign to-do tasking date, etc.).   Allows keeping detailed (but still organized and when appropriate highlighted and indexed) logs that don't clutter the ecco outline itself,  and effortlessly still keep any key info as a sub item.

To use the index feature, for example,  to add key dates/notes to index so that we will have the key note info at fingertips:  Mark what we want to index, Click on Index, shift click on Add Bookmark,  and marked text is instantly indexed.   (Don't hold down shift to manually enter index entry when desired.)

with Zoom and font zoom,  can view the note as small or as large as desired.  (Clicking on the word "Zoom"  restores normal zoom level).

Notes can also be attached to individual items,  for example with the highlighted part being ecco item,  and text being individual MagicView log.   What is cool about that is you can mark a bunch of your items,  (ie. event list  in ecco outline), and view them ALL,  IN CONTEXT, in single MagicView page.   (Hint: use MultiView Borders).  (See Example 7 doing exactly that below.)

In 'MultiViews' you can see a list of all items (Alt + Home),  and instantly jump to any (index of items),  *and* any indexed entries (from any items),  are also accessible as usual from index.

MagicView pages can be added & accessed multiple ways (ex., double click,  WinKey+Z, WinKey+?, right click and select MagicView, etc.).

Example 2

Partial Web Clip

What's going on here

Attached to an ecco item, what a partial clip looks like.

A partial clip can be added to MagicView by selecting any portion of a webpage or any other program (Word, Excel, PDFs, etc.),  and pressing WinKey + Control + C.

You can also just copy (Control + C)  and then paste (Control + V),  or drag & drop.

A partial clip can be saved from web browsers directly next to the currently active ecco item by marking any portion of the webpage and pressing Winkey + Shift + E.  (A similar tool,  Winkey + Control + E  'captures' the clip,  and from within Ecco,  Winkey + Control + E pastes).

Note:  You don't have to memorize more than one hotkey to clip.  Winkey + F12 (from anywhere)  shows a clip control menu of the then relevant clipping functions.  That one key press does it all.  You don't even need to touch the keyboard to clip-- right click on the MV tray icon and select "Next Right Click".   Select the desired clip, and then press the RIGHT mouse button.

Example 3

Complete Web Clip

What's going on here

Attached to an ecco item, what a complete clip looks like.

The size of the page (zoom level) is fully, and instantly controllable.

The page text is searchable in Ecco and MagicView.

You can clip 'complete' HTML in several ways,  including by selecting (highlighting) the page's URL and using the Winkey-F12 menu to create 'New from URL' vewpage.  You can also clip or copy some of the page into MagicView and then use Shift + Alt + O  to load into MagicView the original page.

(To view a super 'exact' version of a page,  click into "View" mode to see the page as if from a web browser. "Magic" mode exposes hidden parts of page,  so,  for 'original' look,  use "View" mode).

Example 4

Marked-up & Bookmarked Web Clip

What's going on here

Direct clip from web,  key info highlighted & bookmarked.

The links (in blue) are live, just like on the original page.

Can append to this page with more clips later,

and when this page is viewed,  the key info  is right there waiting.

The index, links, etc.,  are all saved in the Ecco file,  and available to you as part of your ecco data.

You may notice the browser here is K-Meleon,  and MagicView should work with all browsers.

These examples are taken from the web,  but same for Excel files, Document files, PDFs, etc. etc.

Example 5

MultiView (with borders, in 'Minimalized' MagicViewer)

What's going on here

1. The items.

I opened a notepad and added an Item "Sample Clips".

With that item selected,  minimized Ecco, and opened web browser.

Marked text I wanted to clip, and pressed Windowskey + Shift + E.

Opened another webpage, and repeated--  marked desired clip,  pressed WinKey + Shift + E.

Again with another webpage.

2. The MultiView.

I have the  'MultiView borders' option set.

I marked all 3 Ecco items and pressed Winkey + ?  (from either Ecco or MagicView).

The result is a 'MultiView'.

Alt+Home opens the MultiView index, allowing instant jumping to any page.   Each page can be 'hoisted' by pressing Alt + L  anywhere within that page's portion.   The MultiView can then be recalled by pressing Alt + <.   Any of the pages can be opened directly in your web browser,  and the entire MultiView can be viewed in the browser.

3. The 'minimalized' MagicViewer.

I actually don't use this size much because have found the buttons in normal MagicView extremely easy and fast at doing the most common tasks.   The menu is showing the right-click menu.

MagicView also has a sidebar mode,  where MagicView becomes a sidebar directly with the Ecco window.

Example 6

Magic TimeLine

What's going on here

The timeline (F5) allows instant view of individual, or multiple items.  (ie. you can 'MultiView' single pages you've viewed in the past directly from the timeline).   MultiViews are also saved, so that you can instantly 'recreate' your view.   The pages displayed are the current/active pages.

You can also filter the timeline (Control + F5) using simple or 'Regular Expression' filters.  (Shift + F5 to reset).

Alt + "<"  and ">" will move us back and forth in viewing history (including filtering if selected),

Winkey  + "<" and ">" will move us up and down in the Ecco file,  showing our MagicView pages.

Example 7

MultiView of individual log items.

What's going on here

This is an alternative way of keeping logs,  as compared with example 1.

In ecco is an example log,  with each entry being made to a separate item.

The log entries are attached individually to the ecco items, as shown in top MagicView window.

(You can open multiple MagicView windows if desired.)

The lower MagicView window shows a 'MultiView' with the 'color border' option selected.

Selecting all items in Ecco, and pressing Winkey + ?  brings up this page in MagicView.

In 'color border' mode,  multiview indents the log items automatically.   Other multiview options include 'Footnote mode' which places the item ID tag at the bottom of each item.  Footnote mode is fantastic, for example,  if you use source bibliographic as the ecco item tag,  and attach material as the magicview page.  You can organize in ecco freely,  and when ready,  simply bring up a multiview with all the material.   Drag & Drop into Word and with very little cleanup you are done.

Startup tips and suggestions  Smiley

* Helpful, if Ecco is running before starting MagicView *  Wink

1. You can turn off transparency by right clicking on the MagicView tray icon and de-selecting "Opaque window".

2. You can add MagicView as a sidebar of ecco by:

Pressing Winkey + Control + Z  from within Ecco or MagicView, or

by Selecting SideBar via the "View" menu.

The default startup is for the 'internalized' sidebar mode.

to restore (de-sidebar),  press Winkey + Control + Z,  or,

RIGHT CLICK and select View, and deselect SideBar.

to restore the normal MV buttons,  deselect "Minimalize" on the View menu.

To view any item's viewpage press Winkey + ?, or

Press Winkey + Q to enter "QuickView" mode.

Note: the "Always on Top" feature is automatically deactivated when 'inside' of ecco.

3. You can change the background to lined paper (like ecco)  via VIEW menu "Template > Ruled Paper" option.
You can change color of background via Format > Colors > Default Page color.

the entire default template is customizable,  (including using background 'skins' as in MS Notepad),  and these suggestions are just to get you started.

4. Clicking the MV window's "X" closes the window, NOT the program.   You can freely click "X"  to minimize the view.  (Alt + click "X" will close program).

Winkey + H  will minimze the view in 'Sidebar' mode.

     F11 will maximize the view.

Control + F11 toggles between MagicView and Ecco.

5. One of the key intended purposes of MagicView is to be a replacement for NetSnippets,  MyBase, and other programs for web clip collection and management..   MagicView takes the clip & save concept one step further, and Winkey + Control + C  will also grab & save clips (and whole documents) from MS Word, Excel, E-Mails, etc...   putting directly and instantly at your fingertips a mobile copy of *every* scrap of info you need for your projects.

The Alt + O command will show the original source page for web clips in your default browser,  and will show the original source files for Word and Excel  in the appropriate default program for that file type,  eg., Word or Excel.    MagicView does not cache the original source of clips,  only the portions actually clipped with a link to the source.  Thus,  showing the original source is dependent upon the original source being available and located where it was when the clip was made.

6. F1 toggles the help view MagicView.

Alt - X  is helpful in the help view (just like it is for notes and clips you index) providing a nice table of contents/index for instant jumping.   Control + F search also works.

7. If you upgrade versions of MagicView, be sure to check (Ctrl + F1) your settings.  Especially advanced folder settings.

8. A copy of the version 5 instructions can be found in pdf format here

A Sample .eco file for you to try.

Unzip the attached file for a step-by-step quickstart tour of MagicView's Look & Feel.

Guide summary (detailed in .eco file included in attached .zip):

Quickstart STEPS:

  1. Download the MagicView files from www.EccoTools.com:

    1. optionally MVInstall.exe

  2. Rename the files by removing the "_File" extension.

    1. eg.: MagicView.exe_file to MagicView.exe

  3. Place the files in your ecco program directory.

  4. Make sure this example .eco file is in same directory as the WebClippersSample.eco.web Folder (from the Zip file).  ".web" folders are located in the same folder as the .eco file they connect with.  (This is the normal mode,  a different name and location for the .web folder can be manually designated to override the default,  but is not recommended unless you have a reason to do so-- for example, sharing MV pages between multiple ecco files.)

  5. Optionally, with Ecco not running, run MVInstall.exe ONE TIME.
    1. Then re-open EccoPro.

  6. Run MagicView.exe

    1. NOTE: if prompted by 'anti-spy' software such as ZoneAlarm, etc. AUTHORIZE MagicView. It will not work if it cannot 'spy' and 'take over' Ecco. Most anti-spy software correctly recognize that MagicView is 'spying' on your use of another program. MagicView must 'Spy' on EccoPro in order to work!

If prompted by firewall software, AUTHORIZE MagicView to access DNS, the web, and act as a server. You cannot access most webclip features without access to the Web. You do not need web access for localized files. This example does include a few localized files, so, YOU DON'T NEED WEB ACCESS TO TRY THIS-- BUT YOU'LL BE VERY, VERY LIMITED WITHOUT IT!

    2. MagicView's use of the internet is 100% controlled from the user's machine and does not even check for updates.  It is 100% spyware and adware free.

  7. Optionally set some MagicView settings.

    1. Click the "View" button, and select "Lined Template" .
    2. Click View and if unchecked select "Internalize".
    3. Click View and select "As Sidebar" (you can press Winkey + Control + Z instead).

You should now see the MagicView pane inside of your ecco. You can play with pressing F6 a few times, then Shift + F6, and then ALT + F6 to get a feel for different placement options.

Press Winkey + Q (or Right click inside of MagicView pane and select File > QuickView)

note: The initial default setting for QuickView uses a more universal but often slower connection method with Ecco. You can change this later by selecting File > Folder Options > Alternate QV Connection. Once you are familiar with MagicView it is suggestion you try the change to see which Ecco connection method works best on your system.

Click on any of the sub items of Section B in the demo file.

Some things to try:

  1. You can press Winkey + < or Winkey + > to move up/down in ecco. Left click on the "<" and ">" buttons in magicview pane for same.

  2. Press F11 in magicview pane to enlarge. F11 again to restore. F1 for help. Alt-X index helpful with instructions. F1 again to restore. Press Winkey + Z to see how to restore/remove the button strip. (Also via Right click View > Minimalize)

  3. You can Make your own clips by using Winkey + F12 from your web browser or mostly any other program.

  4. If non-obvious, Ecco ALSO has a built in timeline for clips. (So long as you have any auto-datestamp folder enabled). Press Alt+1 to see in this example.

Note: with  encrypted pages, if you enter wrong password, use Winkey+Alt+D (from MV pane) to clear.

Someother basic features that may not be obvious at first:

  1. Items have additional folder info, which you can view in columns.

  2. Similarly, you can view items by clip date using the Calendar view.

  3. Within MagicView pressing Alt + O will open the original page in your web browser.

  4. You can directly and freely edit & markup any viewpage, just like any other part of your ecco outline or columns.

  5. Alt + Click on any link opens that link in your web browser.

Another screenshot of the "WebClipSample" file.

What's going on here

Ecco allows controlling the size of panes, and allowing multiple panes in single viewpad, including as in this example, the calendar view.

Note: Auto-Dating of clips/viewpages is by an auto-date folder setup (just like normal Ecco).

MV will share (left or right side of ) single pane view.

On dual pane view,  MV takes place of 2nd pane so you can freely adjust size.  (For 2 pane view with MV, add 3rd pane,  or exclude MV from sharing that tab number).

Example 11

From my personal WebClips .eco

Shown with MV pane on left, and with columns.

What's going on here

Alt+F6 to shift MV pane left/right.

Alt + Z or zoom slider to control zoom of view.  Can set default zoom for page,  or just view pages zoomed.  Click on "zoom" when button bar displayed brings to 100%.  (Alt + Control + Z for same via keyboard,  or Right Click > View > Zoom Off). (Control +/- are also shorthand zoom controls).

Perhaps not obvious from picture is that the 'web captured' image is also a live edit pane.  In "Magic" mode as shown here, you can add to, mark-up, and directly edit viewpages, instantly and live.  ("View" mode allows viewing without the ability to modify.)

Edited:

If look carefully can see how a STRUCTURED outline allows ACTUALLY FINDING THE INFO WHEN YOU WANT IT.  "Creedo Personal 'Flexible Computing'  shows up right where I'd look for it,  under software > virtual machines.  A text search for "virtual machines"  or "virtual desktops" would NOT have found this clip,  and I personally did not remember the name "Creedo" until I was making this note.   In the back of my mind I remember the software,  clipped it & put it in outline where made sense.   I can still text search,  but no comparison to organized info, ie. OUTLINE.

Powerful outliner is backbone for keeping outline...  which is why ECCO is so incredibly powerful here.

Example 12

Example of dual internal MV sessions.

One session is set to show active item,  the second manually selected from search results.

What's going on here

Set up a viewpad (or more) with at least three panes.

Run one session of MV and configure to use top pane.

Run second session of MV and use default bottom pane configuration.

Note: Important in at least one of the sessions to exclude every other pane from the View > MagicView Size > Viewpad Exclusions menu.

Example 13

Multiple Ecco sessions.

In the small Ecco session the MV page displays a paste of clip from the 'default' ecco startup template.

What's going on here

Ecco can run with MV in multiple Ecco sessions.

You can send pages between MV sessions, and can load pages into any MV session from any Ecco session.

Note:

1. Multi-Ecco sessions with MV requires adapting Ecco with the freeware 'MultiEcco Enabler' tool (see main EccoTools.com board).

2. The displayed color clip was captured with the freeware EM 'Slang RTF Outline Copier' (see main EccoTools.com board).

Example 14

Example of working with technical documents.

What's going on here

The outline is a sample of what could be a large and very complex outline of the City Code of some city. (Which might be a part of a larger outline of codes and laws of a state, etc.)

The MV pane shows a clip made from a DOC file containing the city ordinance.  Highlighting, tabs, fonts, sizing, etc., from the original document was retained in the clip.  The clip was made from a MS Word file running on a networked machine,  and just like any other ecco item or folder value,  was updated in real time over the ecco workgroup.   The clip can be marked-up and edited even though this particular machine does not have Word installed.   The mark-ups update to all other networked machines just like any other ecco folder value.

The MV button panel is displayed (Winkey + Z to toggle).  The technical material has been highlighted for easy reference by selecting the text to highlight and clicking on the 'Highlight' button.   Highlight color can be selected by clicking on the color box next to the highlight button.    (That box can be toggled to display as a box, or a slash pattern by control clicking on the box).

A private note (Control + F8) has been added in blue (selected by clicking on the "Text" button).  F8 toggles showing private note text, and Shift + F8 toggles showing private note markers.  (Thus you can include private text within the normal flow of a page [text showing, markers hidden],  or hide private text entirely [text and markers hidden]).  Private notes allow freely adding comments and graphics to a page, while still being able to view or print a 'clean' copy of the page.

This item can be included (just like any other ecco item) in a project folder,  so all the relevant laws for that project are gathered together in a single notepad view.  The viewpage can also be mirrored to a subitem in another section of the outline, or even another outline,  and the marked text (including private notes) can be copied (Control + C) and pasted in another note,  or even a word file, etc.

The information is then always at your fingertips.  You can instantly find the law within the outline,  or via keyword search (by item label, pageview content, or both),  by grouping via ecco folders,  and via the magic view F5 history/timeline pane.

The relevant parts of the information are instantly available,  with the important sections highlighted, and commented.     (Using the Alt + X indexing feature is also very helpful on large viewpages).

Every user in the system (for ecco workgroup setups) has access (if such access rights were granted) to the relevant information, and can add/collaborate in real time.   Once something has been researched/added to the outline,   you own it-- and have real access to it.

Example 15

Example of building an outline from multiple viewpages.

What's going on here

In the left Ecco viewpad is an outline being built from clips of viewpages.

The viewpages are stored with their own outline in this Ecco file,  and are being viewed by two internal view panes and two external panes.   (An unlimited number of viewpanes can be opened and edited at the same time with multiple viewpages from the same or different files.)

In this example, each viewpane contains a viewpage attached to items in the Ecco file which were clipped from different websites.

By highlighting any section and pressing Control + Alt + C  (or using the right click menu "Copy > Copy to Child")  any selection can be instantly added as a child to the outline under construction.  (Material can also be dragged from one MV pane to another).

The MagicView installer (MVInstall) should take care of URL link launching automatically,  but if not.....

You can set up a Launch Tool  (Tools > Launch > Manage Launch Menu > New) in ecco,   basically as follows:

Example 16

Example of an external file (in this case a .zip file) as  seamless encrypted internalized viewpage.

What's going on here

To encrypt internalized pages,  set the File > Encryption > Always Encrypt option.

To internalize an external file,  drag & drop the file to the ItemText box (at bottom of MV pane) while holding down the Shift and Control keys.

The viewpage is 'live' and you can double click on any item, drag & drop items out of MV,  or control + right click for 'zip' options.

Internalized pages are stored 100% within the .eco file.   Up to 6.1 Megabytes can be stored per single ecco item.   However, not generally recommended to do that as loading such a large page will take up to 30 seconds.   Pages up to about 60k can comfortably be internalized.  The zip file in this example is 175k and works flawlessly.   (If no other global pointers are used up elsewhere,  each ecco file can hold about 10,000 internalized pages of this size,  just over about 1.5Gigs per file.)

As a general setup it is recommended to have MV store files in the .web folder, and not internally in ecco-- it keeps ecco file smaller, and larger MV pages load faster. (If you want to encrypt files inside the .web folder use an encrypted folder such as pismo's http://www.pismotechnic.com/download/  as the .web folder,  or better/safer to place the .eco file and .web folder inside an encrypted pismo folder or http://truecrypt.org virtual encrypted drive. If you use a truecrypt drive use only NTFS file system with ecco.  Truecrypt FAT + ecco = eventual BSOD.)

Notes:

1. The viewpage updates across networked eccos,  just like any other folder value.   Allows very convenient sharing and shared updating of materials-- so long as the general size is relatively small.

2. MagicView is designed to protect the internalized data from accidental changes. For example, files can be added/deleted directly from internalized .zip files, but to protect the ecco datafile, changes will only be made to the internalized file upon a Control + S, or other intentional save command.  Word, Excel and similar data files will generally not save modification made from within the MV viewpane.   To edit internalized Word and other similar documents,  export the document to a disk file (File > Export as MHT),  edit the exported file,  and then internalize the newly edited file.

3. There are two ways to override the normal protection for Word/Excel etc. files and allow saving changes.  (A) Edit the file in "Package" mode (Alt + F1)  and save normally (Control + S).  Then toggle Package mode off (Alt + F1) and save the magicview page (Control + S  or Winkey + S, etc.).   Or,  (B) A special sequence (Reload/Cancel/Reload/Save/Save) will 'override' the normal protection for Word/Excel etc files and allow saving changes. On most systems, you would thus:  (1) after making any modifications reload the page [winkey + /];  (2) cancel when prompted; (3) Cancel again if prompted a second time; (4) reload [winkey + /] and "Save" the changes; (5) Immediately Control + S to finalize save within MV.

4. While the data is very secure while encrypted inside of ecco,  while being accessed the data can be seen & read by a range of spyware type software.  Ie., while in use of the data is not more secure than opening ordinary .zip file.    Also,  to remove most trances of any encrypted .zip (or any encrypted internalized file in ecco) it is generally necessary to open two other internalized items (eg., internalized .zip files) of the same type and same or larger size in sequence to safely 'flush' most trances of the originally accessed file.   Doing so will generally wipe detection of file contents for most recovery tools.  (The longer your password & the larger the character set [numbers, multi-case, symbols, etc.]  the more secure the data INSIDE of ecco.    Proper password provides US military grade encryption *inside* of ecco and for encrypted MV pages stored externally, but not any grounded images, etc.  For encrypted images use an encrypted .web folder, or, store the images individually as internalized encrypted objects, or, use encrypted internalized MHT format.)
