We have three computers networked with a server in our office. One of
the work stations continuously gets "unable to allocate memory - out
of ID's". I ran Ecco Magic Memory Reporter and got a message that
Ecco free memory is dangerously low. This program reports there are
21,487 items, 1,437 view lines and 65,527 pointers. I have no idea
how to fix this. In the past we have been able to delete the ecco.cfx
and ecco.fdb files and that would help for awhile. Now deleting those
files does not help and the program on that work station does not
work. I also tried replacing the default.ect file with the one at
eccotools.com. That did not help. I have compacted the database and
also tested the database - no errors found.

Does anybody have any suggestions?

Ok,  slowly and calmly.

21,487 items, 1,437 view lines and 65,527 pointers.

Pointers most usually are used by TEXT folders that are filled in for an item.

Each Text folder with any data (1 character or 32,000) uses up 1 'pointer'.

The problem is in the STRUCTURE of your file.

you need to move the data out of some TEXT folders into the items or another kind of folder (multi-choice, date, number), or combine multi-Text folder data in single text folder.

ie.  dealing with a SINGLE ITEM,  your file has more than one TEXT type folder filled with some information.

an example of an easy fix (if relevant)  is changing State from a text folder into a Multi-choice folder.

You cannot simply 'change' a folder type.   You have to move the data into another folder of the 'new' type.  The slang extension is an easy (and free) way to do that.

ecco.cfx and ecco.fdb files  HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS.

ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!!!

the updated default.ect  is helpful in avoiding corruption for NEW FILES YOU CREATE after you update.  IT DOES NOT HELP WITH ALREADY EXISTING FILES.

the EM-Advanced Diagnostics Toolkit is the tool to diagnose corruption issues for existing files-- BUT YOU DO NOT HAVE A CORRUPTION PROBLEM.  (The file might well be corrupt,  but that is not in most likelihood the cause of your memory problem!)

you simple have reached the limit to the number of Text folders that can be assigned data.

Clearing data in text folders  is the cure.

ps: "Compacting" the database would seem like it is relevant to not having enough memory,  but alas,  Compacting relates to the EXTERNAL size of the ecco file, NOT *ANY* of the internal memory or pointers.    The file is simply re-written to disk with literally EMPTY file space removed.    No 'restructuring' relating to pointers or memory is involved.

(in your case,  you do not have a 'corruption' issue.   You simply used up all the memory pointers Ecco allows you to use...  65,000 some TEXT folders attached to items  is Ecco's OUTER LIMIT...     Perhaps see the tutorial and .zip files attached to the Memory Reporter thread  to get a grasp of how Structure impacts on memory use.)
