Introduction to the Tool:
 
    The idea of tool is to provide a '1-step' instant merge feature for Ecco via Word.
 
    There is no need to select folders to 'output'.  (The folder selection comes into play only when you create new Word templates and use the Template Building Tool.)
 
    There is no need to 'export' anything.
 
    There is no need to open Word, or to manually point Word to anywhere.
 
    You can instantly create a template merge file 'on the fly' from any ordinary ".doc" file-- just insert the folders you want wherever you desire in the document.    
 
    You can freely copy and modify existing templates without any special procedures or tools.
 
    Easy & Instant to use up-front,  with deep and powerful features (such as date formatting and codepage control) for advanced and power users.
 
    You can automatically track which items are merged/E-Mailed/faxed and when.  Freely track thousands of items over thousands of merges without using up *any* ecco memory pointers.  
 
    Simply open any Ecco file,   manually select items, or use any selection filter or query in the phone book, and then "Merge!" (or print, or fax, or email) with any Word document or Dot file.

Hopefully super easy to use from the start,   also worth taking time to go over the built-in instruction manual.
 
 
 
For example,  pressing shift while clicking often gives alternative function,  for example:
 
 
Shift click on folder in template builder selects folder and ALL sub-folders,  etc.,
 
 
Shift click on tray icon opens instant Email....

Here is a sample .DOC (MS WORD) file that demonstrates some of the cool power & utility of the tool.
 
 
Usually Alt+F9  will 'show fields' within Word.  (Tools > Options > View > Field Codes).
 
 
 
This is only one of multiple ways to use tool.   Not necessary to open file in Word,  can use file name instead,  or can drag file onto tool dialog window, etc.
 
 
In this example,  
 
Open the .DOC in word,  open a new (default)  file in Ecco.  (the phonebook should display the normal default listings,  but phonebook view does not need to be selected).  
 
Click on Tool's tray icon.
 
Select "Filtered Ecco PHONEBOOK"  as the data source  (Use data from:)
 
and
 
selected as the Word file to Merge,  "Active Word Document".
 
 
 
then just click MERGE.

 
 
 
(right click on Tool tray icon and selection "Options"  to change options such as document type  and date styles, etc.)
 
 
 

DOWNLOAD HERE
 
 
TO DOWNLOAD FILE:  RIGHT CLICK ON FILE LINK (AT PAPERCLIP BELOW) AND CHOOSE  "SAVE TARGET AS"  OR EQUIVALENT FOR YOUR BROWSER ("SAVE LINK TARGET AS", etc.).  
 
otherwise,  in some browsers the file is opened directly in your browser window instead of saving to disk.

Step by step demo of using multiple Ecco data fields to create a 'personalized' report.
 
(Uses same demo .doc file of prior post!)
 
 
 
 
NOTE: in flash example below we also set the "Document Type"  to  'Report' and re-run a MERGE.
 
note:  If we leave the ACTIVE Word window as the MERGE OUTPUT ... the result will be that we get a duplicate of that, as *that* was the active file!  Remember to make the TEMPLATE .DOC  our ACTIVE DOCUMENT (when using that option),  and then we get our merged output.   (You can of course just drag & drop the template file to the dialog,  or select the file name from the pulldown menu, etc.).

Faxing Solutions:
 
MagicMerge (v1.29 and above) has been coded to include fully automated fax merging (Winkey + Shift + Click on tray icon).  
 
However, this is officially an "Unofficial" feature because of the extremely large base of systems that are not actually set up to support the automated Word faxes (because of  windows setups, security settings, microsoft software version, partial windows install, etc.)  
 
Ie. automated fax merging will only work on your system if you can normally fax directly from Word Merge.  If you can't get Word to merge to fax (without MagicMerge),  you won't get it to merge to fax with it.  (Although using MagicMerge is a whole lot easier then using Word's built in merge).
 
If your system has the right internals and security settings... enjoy this bonus!  Smiley
 
 
For the rest of us, printing merged templates to a fax printer is also a nice solution/alternative to automated direct merged faxing.
 
 
You can also use a service such as www.metrohispeed.com  to use email merges to be sent to faxes directly.   Essentially you send to the desired fax number @your_email_2_fax_provider.    This allows you to use one 'Email To' folder to send your merged letters to everyone with an email or a fax.   If they have no email,  your ecco 'Email To' folder lists their (email2fax) email address.    
 
It's actually kind of nice.  Smiley

Example 1  
 
Simple formatted merge output.
 
 
What's going on here  
 
Attached for downloading is an .doc template to view as an example.
 
With normal Word settings the document will appear blank.   Press Alt+F9  in Word to "View Field Codes".
 
Open a new Ecco file normally.  Click on Daily Journal View,   then ALT + Double Click on the blue Daily Journal Folder (or Control + G from that item).
 
Run MagicMerge.   (Right Click on Tray Icon "Document Type"  is document default or "Report").   Left Click on the MM Tray Icon.
 
Select "Active Notepad (Every Item)"  and "Active Word Document"   and then "MERGE".
 
 
 

 
 
 
Notes:
 
The top part is the contents of the Word document (attached below).  Under that is the output from the steps listed.
 
With Word merge commands such as { IF { MERGEFIELD Item_Level } = 1 "
" }
 You can control the spacing between levels.  (You can also add Word controlled outline numbering, etc., etc.).
