Title: Discuss Ecco Tools?
Post by rb on 05/10/10 at 21:47:56

1. Why is it not possible to discuss the examples in the Ecco Tools section?

2. I didn't understand the example using Column linking. However, that may be because I don't have MagicLinks.

In either case, it does not appear that it can do what I needed; a way to link a task to multiple contacts.
(this is not possible since Ecco does not allow multiple parents  :( ).
I need to view each contact and see the linked tasks; not the other way around

1. EccoTools board is  release/tutorial board.

2. This is a discussion board!

3. Try the magicLinks.

see the example on how to set up,  you can see step by step.

there are several ways this can work well for you.

basically,

you can instantly bring up any contact which is linked to any item.

if item has multi-contacts just make them sub items.

[if that doesn't work for your work flow,  and you need multiple columns to assign multi-contacts to very same item,  ask, and that can be enabled]

and link the additional contacts to sub items.

In phonebook you have contacts.

select any contact(s)  and you can bring up either in phonebook,  or in 'context view' ALL the items which link to that contact.

this will allow you to view (in second view pane)  All items relating to any contact.

it is pretty cool,  and works better than I am describing for you.

*Task Item
..*Sub item 1 - EMLinK column with contact 1
..*Sub item 2 - EMLinK column with contact 2
etc.

then,  to pull those phone entries,  Winkey + Alt + U

To do the reverse,  to see every item associated with any contact,

(select the contact and press Control + Shift + Alt + Winkey + U   ..or.. )

To view in context,

Shift + Winkey + U

(add context view column to context view,  allows clicking active the parent item to see full sub context relevant to any task).

I am sorry, but it is really hard to visualize. What I need is something like this (in the Phonebook):

Dave
---- Call Dave and Peter

Peter
---- Call Dave and Peter

where the item "Call Dave and Peter" is the same item.

In other words, when I look at a random contact, e.g. Peter, I need to see all tasks associated with him (which may include tasks that are also associated with Dave). Note that I am not pulling up a particular task that I can reverse to find the contacts (e.g. Peter).

here is a visual example.

In phone book you have "Ecco Sales" contact.

you select that contact (can select multiple but anyhow),

and press Winkey + Shift + U

In the "Context'em" view (you can change name of view if desired) you see the items associated with that contact.

You can have up to 10 linked columns per item.   (You can rename column to "Contact 1" "Contact 2"  or whatever).

in this example showing EMLinK and EMLinK10  (1 and 10 of 10 folders).

You see that Ecco Sales is Contact 1  of test 1  and contact ten of item "5".  both test 1 and 5 show in the Context'em view.

(You can limit to just EMLinK column if desired.)

I think this does exactly what you want,

other than the linked items show up in a linked items pane, instead of 'in line'.

Of you need more than 10 contacts for item,  add sub item with different contacts.

hope is clear to helpful.

Hope this above shows how

Peter  in phone book
can pull in Context'em view
---- Call Dave and Peter
---- and all other tasks of Peter

In effect Peter contact is turned into a FOLDER

Sorry, I am still confused.
1. Would the item "5" be the same as my item "Call Dave and Peter"?
2. Would "Ecco Sales" and "Ecco Tech Support" correspond to Dave and Peter?
3. If I select "Ecco Sales" and hit Winkey + Shift + U, then I would see "Call Dave and Peter" in the Context'em view?
4. If I select "Ecco Tech Support"  and hit Winkey + Shift + U, then I would see "Call Dave and Peter" in the Context'em view?

5. Do I need to select "Ecco Sales" or "Ecco Tech Support" in the EmLink and EmLink10 drop-down menues?
6. I assume that the drop-down menus would contain all my 3,000 phonebook items? If so, then it does not work with that many items in the phonebook.
(I was able to create a drop-down linked column in a new file, but such only contains a few contacts. Maybe popup columns have a max limit?)

1. Would the item "5" be the same as my item "Call Dave and Peter"?

Yes.  Or some item with multi contacts.  You can have multi contacts on every items if you want.  Up to 10 multi-contacts per item.

2. Would "Ecco Sales" and "Ecco Tech Support" correspond to Dave and Peter?

Yes!

These are phonebook contacts.

3. If I select "Ecco Sales" and hit Winkey + Shift + U, then I would see "Call Dave and Peter" in the Context'em view?

Yes!

along with every other item (in context) for which Ecco Sales is a contact...

4. If I select "Ecco Tech Support"  and hit Winkey + Shift + U, then I would see "Call Dave and Peter" in the Context'em view?

Yes!  along with every item Tech Support is a contact for.

it is pretty cool.

5. Do I need to select "Ecco Sales" or "Ecco Tech Support" in the EmLink and EmLink10 drop-down menues?

Yes,  contacts are selected in the EMLinK drop down menus (EMLinK2-10 also).

you can rename column as "Contact 1"  or whatever.

6. I assume that the drop-down menus would contain all my 3,000 phonebook items?

YES!!

that is the Slang magic!

(if not work, this is slang bug important to fix..)

6b. If so, then it does not work with that many items in the phonebook.  (I was able to create a drop-down linked column in a new file, but such only contains a few contacts. Maybe popup columns have a max limit?)

If you follow instructions,  should not be a problem.   This is not a 'popup' this is a Slang use number folder as indexed column folder.

Edit:  Indeed, there is a small bug with the pulldown in selection.   Does not display pulldown if > 1000 phonebook items.   (Worth reporting in eccobug board...).

For time being can still manually assign items from phonebook by assigning ID to clipboard from that PB item,  and pasting that number in the input box in the EMLinK column.

1. I am not sure if slang reads the eccobug board, so I will post on Yahoo instead.
2. Even if this is fixed, I suspect that it will be very difficult to use. How would I find the contact in a 3000 item dropdown list? Currently I search the phonebook for the contact, and when found, just drag my ToDo over to the contact. However, this of course only works with one contact.

This will work even now:

If you select any phone contact,  right click  select "Depends >> Assign to Clipboard"

then at task in column desired simply paste  (will be a number).

Like magic the contact name will show up in column (if set up properly).

You can make an icon hotkey for the depends/assign function to make it single click.

ALSO

you can set up a "Key Contact"

list.

assign your key contacts there.

then you can easily assign them (make the reference to column your key contact list).

<You can still use manual assign from phonebook even if you use as key contact list).

When I select the contact in the Phonebook, there is no right-click option for  "Depends >> Assign to Clipboard"

Try this,

is really almost as easy as drag & Drop.

In notepad use the Depends >> Assign to clipboard tool.

A "?" or other icon will show up in last command icon box.

drag it over & make it a standard icon.

then in phone book,  click icon for any contact.

then in notepad,  in desired link column right click & select paste.

it really does work pretty cool.

(Also if this was not clear,  you can go to tray icon Ecco Extension options,  and set hotkey for assign depends id..)
