HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\U.S. Robotics before starting a new
installation.

In this day and age, it's likely that you may have something other than
a "normal" Palm, which might have "special features" like the Sony Clie
units, so you just really really should install the entire Palm Desktop
software that came with that unit. And, if you have an older version of
the Palm Desktop software installed, you should uninstall it and restart
your computer before installing the new version. See my remarks towards
the end of this regarding uninstalling your old version.
However, once you install the Palm Desktop, DON'T USE IT. There's no
need to even launch it. In fact, launching it actually SCARES me.
Just let it sit there and sleep.
But I digress. Let's get things installed. Ignoring everything
you've read or heard before, this is all you need to do:
1. Install your Palm Desktop software. Just let let the installation
routine install the program to its default location, unless you'd
rather install it elsewhere. [Yes, there is no need whatsoever to
install it under the ECCO directory, or name it Pilot, or anything
other than just letting the installation routine do whatever it wants
to do.]
2. Shutdown and restart your system (reboot).
3. Do our favorite Windows Registry hack. Open the Registry editor,
and navigate to this location:
[HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\U.S. Robotics\Pilot Desktop]
When you install ECCO's Palm conduit files (we'll do that later), they
MUST be allowed to name themselves here with the names the ECCO
developers gave them:
Application0
Application1
Application2
Application3
So, if you see any other "Applications" here that have any of these
names, change the names to end with higher numbers. Like
"Application4" and "Application5."
That's it -- you're done. Now, exit out of the Registry editor.
4. Shutdown and restart your system (reboot).
5. Install the ECCO Palm conduit files. Just use the SETUP32.EXE
file you've downloaded from the NetManage web site, if indeed you've
done that. In other words, just "install ECCO." If you already have it
installed, you just need to choose the option to install the "Pilot
connectivity files." If you haven't installed ECCO at all, just go
ahead and install it, making sure to choose the option to install the
"Pilot connectivity files."
6. Shutdown and restart your system (reboot).
That's all there is to it, folks. Take it in this order, reboot in
between the steps, and rename any applications to "4" or higher. ECCO
and your Palm device ought to work just fine.
Life isn't always quite this simple, so your situation may vary. For
instance, if you're getting a new Palm device that replaces an old
one, you should uninstall the old Palm Desktop before installing all
this stuff. In fact, I would also recommend deleting the entire
registry key mentioned above, so the installation routines will create
a new, clean one. Also bear in mind that the conduits are controlled
by the "Pilot HotSync Options" feature found in ECCO's "Tools" menu,
and not by the Pilot HotSynch Manager program itself.
Which brings up one more issue -- there is a little bit of rocket
science involved in really making this work. Fortunately, ECCO
provides an EXCELLENT overview in its included "Help" file. Go to
Help / Contents, and then click on the "Importing and Exporting" item
shown on the resulting window. Down at the bottom of the resulting
list is this item:
Using ECCO with the U.S. Robotics® Pilot PDA
Go into that, read it, and learn it. This goes over how to set up the
Pilot HotSync options, and, more importantly, it describes how normal
ECCO folders are used to synch the information to and from the Palm
device. Read all about the "Pilot Memos" folder in order to learn how
to get information to go to the Palm device's "Memo Pad" application.
Dream and comprehend how this will allow you to send virtually
ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING IN YOUR ECCO FILE to the Palm device, simply
by including that folder in your views as a column, and assigning a
value to the item in that column. Then, you can spend lots of time
chopping everything up into memo-sized chunks so they'll actually make
the trip over to your Palm device.
I hope this helps! If you have any questions that you don't find
answered here well enough, please POST THEM TO THE GROUP, and you'll
find plenty of help from all of the folks here who have experienced a
varied array of configurations -- different versions of Windows,
different Palm devices, and so on. I'm pretty confident that we can
find an answer to your questions!
And now, here is the "Reader's Digest version" of the above:
You do not need to install the Palm Desktop program anywhere specific
at all -- you can let it install in its default location, just fine.
Really, this is ALL there is to it:
1. Install Palm Desktop, anywhere you like.
2. Reboot.
3. Go into the Registry and rename any "Applications" to end with the
number 4 or higher ("Application4").
4. Reboot.
5. Install ECCO's Pilot conduit files, via ECCO's normal installation
routine.
5. Reboot.
That's it! This is all about the order you install things and
renaming any "Applications" so ECCO can install its "Applications" as
0, 1, 2, and 3.

3. I transferred the ECCO data files I wanted from
my old computer to an ECCO data folder on the new computer
4. I hooked up the Hotsync cable to the Treo 680
and pressed Hotsync
I was asked if I wanted to create a file on this computer for my Treo
username and to then to point to the location where my ECCO file was
stored on the new computer. Once I did that, the Hotsync process
began and worked like magic. No issues at all to report and
subsequent Hotsync operations are all fine. Good luck.

You don't have to *delete* the Palm conduits. You only have to rename the first *four* (0-3; I renamed mine to 20>23)
However, it is *extremely* important to modify the Palm's "HotSynch Manager" options to set the original Palm Conduits (Calendar / Contacts / Tasks /Memos) to "Do Nothing" as the default option. Otherwise, *both* Ecco and the Palm Desktop will try to synch with the handheld at the same time with disastrous results. I guess this step (or, rather, the lack thereof) is what spoils most people's efforts to synch; I, personally, never have had any problems synching my Tungsten T2 to any of my successive laptops (W98>WXPSP2).
Some notes (I am sure you know this already, but for the benefit of others who may be interested in this topic):
- You will find out that the Palm's screen is *very* constraining. You will have to edit your Ecco entries to fit or live with the resulting mishmash.
- Contacts synch is limited in that only one address, work *or* home is sent to the Palm (depending on what you have chosen to be the "default" address in Ecco). This was a dealbreaker for me, so I export my Contacts from Ecco and import them to the Palm *Desktop* (a pain to do since you have to match data and, AFAICT, the pairings are not stored so you have to do this every time you synch), but then *both* home and work addresses will be sent to the handheld.
- You can choose which components to synch from Ecco and which from the Palm Desktop. For ex., for the above, in Ecco (Tools / Pilot Hotsync Options), I choose *not* to synch the Phonebook and, in the Palm's "HotSynch Manager" options (right click on the HSM tray icon and choose "Custom"), I set the Contacts conduit (for my particular purposes) to "Desktop Overwrites Handheld".
- Repeating ToDos not sent as such to the Palm"
