For those who depend on Word in the business persona often need to take outline notes from Ecco Pro and insert them into a Microsoft Word document.  This worked correctly in Word 95, but Microsoft changes how outlines are processed in Word 97 and 2000 - and outline numbering of pasted text no longer works (Word does not understand the tab indention used by Ecco).

Ecco Word to the rescue!

Ecco Word is a Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) script file which, when incorporated into work following the instructions on the Download page, allows you to copy Ecco Text to the clipboard, paste it into Word 97 and 2000, and then correctly number and indent so that it closely matches Ecco Pro.

Installation Instructions

Once you download the text file containing the small program, here are instructions for installing it into Word 97/2000.

  1. Start Microsoft Word 97/2000.
  2. From the pull down menus select "Tools" -> "Macros" -> "Visual Basic Editor".
  3. From the pull down menus in the Visual Basic Editor window select "Insert" -> "Module".
  4. A blank module window appears. Paste the program (in its entirety) from the downloaded text file into this new window.
  5. Close the module window.
  6. Close the Microsoft Visual Basic window.
  7. Switch back to Word.
  8. You can optionally add a button to one of your standard toolbars to call this macro, making it easier to run.

Usage Instructions

  1. Create a new Word 97/2000 document.
  2. Copy a small outline from Ecco into Word 97/2000 (copy in Ecco and paste into Word).
  3. Select all the outline text you just pasted (it should appear white on black)
  4. From the pull down menus select "Tools" -> "Macros" -> "Macros..."
  5. A popup window appears listing all the macros defined in Word 97. Select the macro "CLC_EccoToWord" and press OK.
  6. The macro window disappears and the tab indents will be  converted to Word 97/2000 indents.
  7. When the conversion is done (it will take some time on larger outlines) any flashing stops and you regain control of Word 97/2000.  Note: Word 2000 processes the script much faster than Word 97.
  8. You may now apply any outline numbering you choose.

Limitations

If you process a large outline some indenting toward the end may not be proper.

Word 97/2000 becomes confused and starts re-numbering outline items if it encounters a paragraph which itself starts with a number.
