Title: Windows 10 Update related
Post by mikeying@hfec.biz on 06/22/20 at 20:11:22

I have been using EccoPro for many years.  Yesterday, my windows 10 machine had a message saying my windows 10 version will be out of support and I accepted the choice to upgrade.  It went through a normal Microsoft update process.  But after that, my EccoPro32 stopped working.

Now, when I launch the EccoPro32 program, it prompts an error: "Unhandled Registry Error (CFO)"

Anybody know how to get around it?

Good news, I found a solution posted by David Goldbrenner on Facebook:
------------------
My Win 10 installation just upgraded to the latest version, and I started getting the "Unhandled Registry Error (CFO)". The problem seems to be that Ecco is unable to get access to required registry keys, probably due to some security changes. I fixed it as follows:
1. I found the executable, ecco32.exe, in C:\program files\ecco pro
2. Right click > Properties
3. Compatibility tab
4. Click "Change Settings for All users"
5. Check "Run this program as an administrator"
------------------
Thank you David. It was a life saver. Appreciated.

I have been using EccoPro since 1994 (on my first Windows machine!).    I am currently on Windows 10 and using v 4.01 of EccoPro.    Several months ago I began having a problem loading Ecco but could open it if I right-clicked on it and used "run as administrator."    Now even that won't work - when I try to open Ecco it prompts me for my file password, but then the EccoPro screen is just black.   I've uninstalled, rebooted, re-installed a few times with no success.

My first question is, is there a newer version past 4.01?    I tried to download the EccoPro file (which may be v.4.544?) from this website but get an error message that says "RESTRICTED CONTENT  Governmental regulations prohibit the viewing of this page from the IP address . . . "   But I'm not on a government or business computer, so I'm now sure why this download won't work.

Second question, when my v.4.01 installs it goes into the C:Program Files (x86) directory, not directly into Program Files.   I tried installing it to C:Program Files but that did not work either.   Is x86 the correct directory?

Third question, if my v.4.01 is the latest (or no one can help me download the Ecco file from this website), then can anyone help me get Ecco back?    I'm dying without it; my whole (work) life is in that file!

P.S.    Ecco still works okay on my laptop, which is also Windows 10, so I'm not sure what happened in recent months on the desktop.   Could be that my laptop has not installed all of the recent Windows updates.

hmmm.   ::)

Tried http://forums.eccoMAGIC.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1193820851/0#0  thread,  and saw  http://forums.eccomagic.com/forum/Attachments/pre-release-Manual_Install_001.zip  link.. which seemed to work fine...

4.01 is newest version.

install into non-program directory.

run w/ admin priv.

While this thread is about 3 years old, a W10 update (most likely...), has struck again. But, Thankfully! (to all involved in this Q&A ), Updating the Properties as recommended solved the problem ('Unable to run command' when running Ecco).

I'm running the 4.01 (32bit) under the 4.6.6 64bit wrapper; on a W10 21H2 Build 19044.2728 w/ 64 Gb RAM. This workstation (Alienware M51 laptop) is my base analysis & data processing machine but I synchronize to a Dell XPS-15 that is the mobile tool.
It's all worked pretty well with the workload at about 9:1 on the M51 to the XPS. I haven't added much but Magic to the EccoPro setup and until this event, haven't had any trouble. I migrated an InfoSelect database to Ecco around 1993 or '92. Nothing was as nimble as InfoSelect but Ecco was flexible enough to adapt. The calendar and project timekeeping functions added so much, I've never looked back.

Hi rbwISE,

I've been hit with a windows update and now my previously running fine plain vanilla Ecco32.exe 4.01 (supposedly 64-bit) wont run. I get the message "Unhandled Registry Error (CFO)". Im on a 64bit Lenovo, and just installed Windows 10 update to W10 Build 1903. What do I need EXACTLY to get Ecco to run? Do I need 4.6.6 64bit wrapper? If so, where do I get it and how do I install it?
Is there a more recent Ecco, or do I need some extensions, or?

Alulaq2,
Please forgive my delayed reply. I only check this site every couple weeks or so.
If you haven't found it yet, the solution that worked for me was to set the Ecco exe run permission 'as Administrator'.
I've seen the thread reference Registry permissions and my error was about running the exe but both are solved by Admin privileges.

Good Luck!
