Title: eccoMAGIC - HOWTO?
Post by Lexje on 12/11/07 at 15:48:46

Hi,

I'm looking for some examples on how eccoMAGIC.exe works.
Following situation:
Laptop running Vista Premium.
Have used Ecco before, but lost contact.
As I really kept coming back to Ecco's capabilities, returned and found Ecco still runs, even on Vista.
Wonderfully running Ecco from my USB stick!!
Have been trying, testing several things following fora, links etc.
Finally, want to try eccoMAGIC, after starting, it sits in the tray, so this seems Ok.
It shows the Quick Reference.

But: I can't get it to function?..???
Can anybody confirm it runs under Vista?

Thank you

eccoMagic *should* be running fine under Vista,

but,

there is a wide variety of system options and flavors of Vista,

and it may be,

some mod might be needed in eccoMagic for a paticular Vista setup.

If you enter two ITEMS into ecco,  any text,
then copy them (Ctrl+C)

if you press ctrl+v  you should paste 2 items into ecco.

works right ?

now,  if you press shift+ctrl+v   if eccoMAGIC is working,  you should paste one item into ecco that has two lines.

if this doesn't work,

try exiting eccoMAGIC and running it as a LAUNCH tool from within Ecco.

Thanks for your suggestion.
I followed your suggestion and indeed this works.

But how do I copy multiple lines from e.g. Firefox webpage to within one line in ecco?

Thanks for your help!

Erwin

try this:

mark something in firefox,

copy it (Ctrl+C)  or (rt click "Copy")

go to ecco,

decide where you want to paste it,

press Win+Shift+Ctrl+V

does that help  ?

ps: actually Shift+Ctrl+V will get the result you specifically asked for.   See the eccoMAGIC help (click on tray icon) for more options.

I've tested your way.
There is no difference in the output from either commands;
Look at mij prtscrn.

Purpose would be to retain +/- layout formating, but to be within one 'level' item.

Also: Is there any way eccoMAGIC will also fill in the Net Location column when pasting from Firefox?

Thanks for sticking with me.

yes,  simply add an auto assign rule looking for URL://#  (old rules)

or    condition itt~=\Q<URL://\E(.*?)>   with value {1}  using slang rules.

however,

from your graphic,  the extension is NOT activated.

ie.  neither of the pastes are eccoMAGIC pastes.

______________

Have attached a copy of what a working eccoMAGIC webcopy paste looks like,

copying and pasting the above.

Okay, so it absolutely does not seem to work.
I'm running Vista Home Premium.
Here are screenshots of procesexplorer:

If there's anything I can do to help debug this, please let me know.
I want to get this running absolutely!

Thank you.

just to check

1) when you launch form within Ecco,  (as a luanch tool),   still does not work for you ?

2) after that, (if does not work for you still)  try running eccoMAGIC with administrator priviledges.

3) have uploaded a new version which might solve some rare issue,  (ie. use this in tests).

eccoMAGIC via launch tool does definitely not work, I've tried that.
Will test admin settings.

At the moment I'm trying to get eccoext to run under wine. (without succes though...)
Thanks

I think I've tried it all;
Ran eccoMAGIC as Admin - no change to block pasting
Ran eccoMAGIC as Admin in XP SP2 compatibility mode - no block pasting

Mind you: I run eccoMAGIC from my USB stick (where eccoext also lives)
I'm not very familiar with behaviour of USB stick programs.
I explicitly rebooted the CPU and verified the changed settings in properties, and they were still active.

Once I changed run properties to Admin, launching from the launcher gives an error. (As the pop-up for allow / not allow should come up)

What can I do next?

Let's start with the basics.  :)

Attached is a little debug program.    Download and rename without _file extension  (ie. so will be.exe).

Run and should show you a little message about what program it is attempting to connect with.

If you activate Ecco you should see this message,  and be able to press shift+control+c  to copy the message to the clipboard.

paste back the message shown from Ecco,   (and if that does not work,  let me know and manually type in the message shown).

to exit just double click the tray icon for the program.

if all works as expected,  please do for ecco with and without the extension running (if possible for you).

Thx for sticking with me!
I'll try your suggestion, but before that I'd like to give another idea:
Allthough difficult to define for sure, I have the impression that eccoMAGIC ONLY functions correctly the 1st time run. Could it be that this has to do with running it as Admin? That one should 'allow' to run as Admin with 'each' copy / paste action? And just because eccoMAGIC does not pop up the 'allow or not' question, it just seems like it is not functioning....

1. Without eccoMAGIC:
Reporting from ecco32.exe [ Ecco - [M:\EccoPro\EccoPro\GTD_Erwin_05-12-07.eco] ]

2. With eccoMAGIC:
It shows the same message, but am not able to paste it into Ecco

The web paste Winkey + Ctrl + Shift + V  should work even if you are within the Slang extension.

copy text off your web browser & try it.

(it still does not work ?)

also,  in normal Ecco  (no slang extension)   does it work ?

based on results of 1st debug,   EM is connecting with the ecco32.exe

let me know about the above,  and will have another debug for you,

so we can narrow down what exactly is being blocked.

You're very observative! Thx.
I did not notice the reporting tool indeed reports ecco32.exe..

I tried, but it stays the same, I'm getting more and more confused..

Anyway, winkey+ctrl+shift+v does not work...
What am I doing wrong?

Title: Re: eccoMAGIC - HOWTO?
Post by Admin on 01/01/08 at 17:10:53

let's isolate the problem.

Could you try EM  with ecco in your Vista  *without* the Slang extension running...

(let's see if it's an issue with the Visa... or an issue with the extension under vista..)

also,

do any of the other EM programs work,

such as EMXP  or the OUTLINE ZOOM ?

Title: Re: eccoMAGIC - HOWTO?
Post by Lexje on 01/02/08 at 01:58:45

I don't follow you.
To be more specific: what you see in the screenshot:
I first copied several lines of your post on the forum (Firefox)
Next I make a new TLI and execute ctrl-Q.
Next I create a sub item and execute winkey+ctrl+shift+v
Next I test pasting a 2nd time

Then I close ecco.
close EM
log ogg vista
log on again
startup ecco32 (NOT eccoext)
and do the same exercise as above

Then you get the 'unknown' symbol pasted
The last winkey+ctrl+shift/v was done while running ecco32.exe.

As for your last 2 requests:
Where can I find info on  EMXP and OUTLINE ZOOM?
-> Okay, found them, must say site is very unclear and confusing... Never even noticed these jewels!!
-> Outline Zoom seems to work
-> Having difficulty to get EMXP to function, but off course I don't know where I'm supposed to use it.. Okay, after some fiddling; Yes this works!!

So I'm under the impression that it's to do with Slang extension...?

I've searched the forum, but found nothing....
If I'm not mistaken the startup flash screen of eccoMagic doesn't say anything about this either?

Here's a shot of testing on a XP non priviledged user. As far as I can tell all seems functioning....
Allthough the reporting tool also reports ecco32.exe...

Just for information:
I gather eccoext.exe calls ecco32.exe? On my key, eccoext.exe = 202 KB and ecco32.exe = 4967 KB

Title: Re: eccoMAGIC - HOWTO?

run this (in your Vista setup)

and activate Ecco.

From within ecco try pressing  Ctrl+Shift+V

and see what that gives,

then try with Ctrl+Shft+Winkey+V

report back what you've got..

ps: double check you've got the latest eccoMagic version (www.eccomagic.com   or eccotools.com )

Title: Re: eccoMAGIC - HOWTO?

Results:
Running eccoMAGIC v2.16
(also see scrshot)

1. start your tool
2. start eccoext.exe from stick
3. tested a) ctrl+shift+v -> You're hooked into Ecco!
            b) ctrl+shift+winkey+v -> You're hooked into Ecco!
4. started eccoMagic
5 did same keystroke tests -> NOTHING HAPPENS when eccoMAGIC is loaded...
6. changed eccoMAGIC settings to run as Admin for all users -> NO DIFFERENCE

Interesting.

and you try the same procdedure (load first eccoMagic and then eccoext)  and no go ?

Try same procedure with this diagnostic,  same sequence as previous test:

within ecco notepad:

win+Ctrl+Shift+V

then

Ctl+Shift+V

results ?

Okay:
1. Load debugtool
2. Load eccoext
3. Do a) -> Yes, we have properly hooked into ECCO !! is pasted
        b) -> Nothing is pasted, but we get a popup window with same text as above
4. Load eccoMAGIC (admin rights)
5. Do a) -> Yes, we have properly hooked into ECCO !! is pasted
        b) -> Yes, we have properly hooked into ECCO !! is pasted ALSO

Tried the same, loading eccoMAGIC before eccoEXT.
Pasting works using both keycombinations. It will only paste after I have copied something into the cache.

not clear on results.

without debug,  if you load EM first and then eccoEXT,

can you paste with EM pastes ?  eg.  Win+Ctrl+Shift+V ?

if you copy from your browser,  and paste with the winkey combo this way,  does it work ?

Hmmm, strange...
I just tried, without loading the debugtool:
1. load eccoMAGIC
2. load eccoext
3. copy from firefox
4. Win+Ctrl+Shift+V
Gives positive result, Also, for the first time, I see a popup flashing by saying 'complete'

Kind of cool, eh ?

Title: Re: eccoMAGIC - HOWTO?
Post by Lexje on 01/03/08 at 14:01:10

Sure is cool, but I would like to see it behave 100% consequent, which at the moment it does not..
As to my knowledge, once you copy a subject into memory, windows should retain the item, and paste with each paste you execute.

It sure seems to make a difference whether to load eccoMAGIC before or after eccoext.

What do we do next to get this 100% straight?

1. Am not following issue about 'retain the item'.

2. Yes on some Vista systems EM might needed to be loaded first.   Have you tested for sure that applies here ?

3. Likely am not following,   what is not working 100% for you ?

Just to note, (if non-obvious),   clicking on the tray icon of most tools will bring up instructions!

right clicking on tray icon of most tools brings up menu, ONE OPTION OF WHICH IS FOR HELP (sometimes under the program name,  not necessarily 'help')

hope helps!

ps:  EM-XP  (magic eXPressions)  has recently gotten new on-line instructions, etc.
